Looks like a nice event on February 22.
You are invited to an UPPERCASE Christmas party on Saturday, December 22 from 2-5pm. (Please note that we changed the date to ensure that Beyond magazine will be printed and delivered!)
We are celebrating a successful and memorable year (oh, Shatner), the launch of the next issue of Beyond magazine (yes! a new issue!) and, of course, the holiday season (time off!). Please join us for some treats, beverages and good cheer among friends.
This is also the last day that the store will be open in 2007, so everything will be on sale--a pre-Christmas boxing day extravaganza for all you last-minute shoppers!
Janine's making goodie bags of UPPERCASE treats, so please let us know if you will be attending. (Click here to RSVP).
The cuteness continues! (new stuff has arrived!) Join us this evening for First Thursday celebrations - we'll be open until 9pm. A portion of the proceeds today are going to One Laptop per Child.
There's a great event in Edmonton this weekend: The Royal Bison Art & Craft Fair. I wish I could go! If you're going, take pictures for me. Presents are ok, too.
Our little typewriter club is getting together Saturday at 2pm in the Palette Coffeeshop (same floor as UPPERCASE). Everyone is welcome. If you have a machine to show off or donate to the group, please do stop by.
The images above are from an amazing collection of typewriters being auctioned off here.
I sold my Olympia yesterday to a lovely girl from the UK who is lugging it home as carry-on luggage! I know it has found a loving and attentive new owner. I enjoyed cleaning up this machine and giving it a new life. Next project: a green Royal Quiet Writer Deluxe!

Thank you to Aaron Leighton for illustrating the postcard above.
Thank you to all who came to the inaugural typewriter club meeting. What noisy, creative fun!

I'm pleased to announce the launch of
shop.uppercasegallery.ca!
The online store presents a selection of my favourite stationery items, interesting objects, recommended books and works for sale in the gallery. Please have a look around. More items and inventory will be added on a weekly basis.
Calgary customers have the option of having their purchases couriered city-wide; Canadian and US customers can select from Canada Post and FedEx shipping. If you run into any glitches with the site, please let me know: it's brand new to the world, so there's bound to be some growing pains. Thank you!
The shot above is my initial rough of the site design. The product shots (below) are original photographs taken specifically for shop.uppercasegallery.ca with my newly indispensable Nikon D40. They were shot in the store and throughout the Art Central building. You're welcome to use images from the webstore as long as you credit UPPERCASE and link back to us, thanks.
Helvetica was a very enjoyable documentary movie. Although the majority of the audience was likely connected to the design industry in some way, I think the sincerity of the film, along with its lively visuals, interesting music and eclectic cast of graphic design "heroes", would entertain and inform a broader audience. It was nice to sit in the theatre and share laughs with a like-minded crowd.
Although this was a movie about a typeface, it was also about personality: the character of this ubiquitous typeface, and the character of the interviewed designers and their work spaces. Some interview highlights and studio glimpses included Massimo Vignelli (spare and to the point), Erik Spiekermann (arrogant, opinionated, hilarious), Stefan Sagmeister (his office wall is mirrored! it figures – he can admire himself all day long), Michael Bierut (always amusing), David Carson (up to his old tricks), Paula Scher (playful), Jonathan Hoefler (smart, erudite) & Tobias Frere-Jones (eloquent).
I look forward to viewing the DVD when it is released later this fall. It's definitely Helvetica Love for me.
See the film tomorrow evening at the Uptown.

Thank you to everyone who attended last night's First Thursday or phoned/emailed their bids. Lisa Brawn's Topical Ointment silent auction was a great success, with nearly $600 raised for the Elephant Artist Relief fund.
The gallery looks particularly colour-coordinated with popping oranges and contrasting blues. Lisa's show will be up for the next two weeks.
Two boxes of books have just arrived from Die Gestalen/Prestel. Looks like a rainy weekend ahead, so I'll be curling up with these new books. Remember that UPPERCASE is now open Sundays as well, so come by and spend some time with us.
Meet Jacqulynn Mulyk, my Art Central neighbour across the atrium. She recently started a blog and website and there's a post of her local television appearance about the painting parties that she hosts. I'm a fan of her wonderfully textured paintings of floral patterns which you can see on her website gallery.
A rare event: an evening devoted to typography! Veer is presenting a screening of Helvetica, the documentary film about the ubiquitus typeface on Tuesday, May 8. I'm sure it will sell out, so get your tickets today.

We've started "The Captain's Blog" in honour of The Shatner Show. We will be posting frequently in the weeks leading up to the opening of the show and the launch of the book.
You may wonder why we have so much enthusiasm for William Shatner... The project began last summer when my husband and I were driving across Canada and we listened to Shatner's Has Been album quite a lot. We were really quite moved with the emotional range of the album, plus the quality of music is really great. We were brainstorming ideas for upcoming shows in the gallery and The Shatner Show idea was hatched. Later, when I did some research about Shatner and found out he was about to be 76, I set the goal to have 76 Shatner images... In the spirit of all things Shatner, I took the idea to the next level and decided to publish a book as well.
I started the project as an average appreciator of Shatner (and proud of his Canadian heritage) but my admiration has grown as I find out more about him and his loyal fans. His sense of humour about himself is quite an inspiration to me and to our participating artists.
I've posted a few teaser images from our upcoming book and exhibition, The Shatner Show. Please click here to find out more! If you'd like to include these images in your blog to help spread the word, you're most welcome to.
Mike Kerr is organizing and Illustration Round Table, a casual gathering of illustrators and any other interested parties to discuss illustration related topics.
Our most recent crop of illustrators will be leaving the den soon and they are curious what the illustration world outside ACAD is all about. I am hoping some of you would be interested in sparing a couple of hours to chat, your generousity would be greatly appreciated! Topics might include personal histories, business strategies, inspirational stories, or horror stories. I am tentatively thinking the afternoon of Thursday April 12. However if some people are interested, but that day doesn't work I could reschedule. The venue will likely be ACAD and I am sure there can be some refreshments.
Please email Mike if you're interested in participating. wrong ( at ) telusplanet (dot) net.
