Vancouver event: Salt Spring in the City

I love a good craft and art fair and there's one in Vancouver this weekend that I'd attend if I could. Salt Spring in the City brings artisans from Salt Spring Island into the big city to show and sell their wares. "Over thirty vendors have been invited to attend Salt Spring in the City," write the organizers, "It's a curated, pop-up village market, where the criteria for inclusion means the product must be designed, and produced on Salt Spring Island. The Vancouver showcase will include food and fashion, paintings and pottery, wine and crafts, and a sense of nostalgia for the West Coast’s homesteading practices. Visitors will discover the wares of woodworkers, designers, jewellers and potters, artisanal cheese makers and preservers, weavers and painters, artists and foodies."

Heritage Hall, at 15th & Main Street
Friday, March 4: 4pm to 9pm

Congratulations on turning 5, CollageCollage

CollageCollage, a lovely stockist in Vancouver that fosters children's (and parents') creativity, is celebrating a milestone. Five years in retail is a great accomplishment! Erin Boniferro writes, "I really can't believe it's been FIVE years since we set up shop on what was a lonely little street in East Van. And look at us now! A bustling store on a sweet little street. I'm so thankful for our community of small businesses, local families and artists big and small coming together to make this shop what it is."

Join the celebration this Saturday at CollageCollage from 1-4pm.

You can find out more about CollageCollage in issue #14, an UPPERCASE dedicated to play and children's book illustration.

A Pretty Pop-up Shop in Vancouver

For my Vancouver friends, there's a special pop-up shop opening on August 1:

West End General Store Popup is a business partnership between Oollo Tea and Forest & Waves. The store front is presented by Production Road, a studio + shop in the West End of Vancouver. The concept is to open a hybrid shop of a tea house in a surfing beach shack in the Pacific Northwest.

Oollo Tea will present farm direct whole leaf teas and cold brewed teas. Partnering with local food entrepreneurs, an Oollo Tea infused dessert collection of ice cream, chocolate, cheesecake and macaroon will also be available!

Outdoor inspired retail products from Forest & Waves: backpacks, surfboard bags, beach bags, books, cards, prints, and apparel.  Also, Forest & Waves will be presenting a collaborated apparel line with Caravan Beach Shop in Tofino, BC.

Lastly, the shop will also feature the new exclusive Lemonni products. Well-designed items from paper goods to home textiles like tea towels and pillows.

West End General Store Popup will be open from August 1 to September 14, 2014 at Production Road, 990 Nicola Street, Vancouver.

We're a proud supporter of Got Craft?, Vancouver's largest indie craft fair. Started in 2007, Got Craft? aims to bring together a community that fosters handmade and D.I.Y. culture. In addition to their offerings from makers in the area, Got Craft? has workshops so visitors can make something to take home. We've sent a selection of our products and back issues out to the event as well.

The event runs December 14th and 15th. Full details here

Vancouver: Porchlight Press holiday markets

Vancouver's Porchlight Press will be debuting their line of greeting cards this weekend at two different fairs. Please read their newsletter for the details of the sale locations. Porchlight proprietor Heather Braun wrote in with some sweet things to say (thanks, Heather!):

"Creating my own line is really a long time coming—I'm super excited about getting them out there, I hope people enjoy them! I want to take this opportunity let you know, a few years back, seeing through UPPERCASE how so many others were pursuing their creative passions, it was actually a big influence on my taking the leap to leave my career and start Porchlight. Like so many others, I adore your magazine, it's like Christmas every time it arrives."

Below is a video highlighting Porchlight's letterpress workshops.

hand lettering lessons

We're proud to support Vancouver's Got Craft? again this winter. During that event sign painter John Lennig (from BIG TOP Sign Arts) will be hosting a hand lettering workshop. John will discuss brush lettering in general and specifically the BullNose letter style, one of the most basic of hand painted styles. Participants will also take home a piece they've created. What an inspirational way to spend a weekend morning!
