These porcelain cups are designed so that you can stitch patterns into the form.
Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and wind and made it out to the s-t-i-t-c-h show last night. Many cute softies were adopted into loving homes. Since all of our artists were so prolific, there is still plenty left to see in this lovely show, so we're extending it through next week.
View the set on Flickr. If you see something that you'd like, please inquire via email.
Art and craft: sewn, crocheted, knitted, embroidered, adorned
We are a presenting a one-day show called Stitch which features the handiwork of many local and Canadian craftsters. The amount of effort that our participants have dedicated in making their pieces is quite remarkable. I am sure that you'll fall in love with one of the softies, the exquisite embroidery, beautiful linens and illustrative sewn collages. You can take your purchases home with you immediately since this is a one-day show. (Sorry, this show is in the physical gallery only.)

On the 30th January 2009, Joanne B Kaar and Lynn Taylor launched their paper boat project — a fundraiser for Mary-Ann's cottage, a living history museum in Caithness Scotland run by volunteers. As paper boats are sent to Joanne from around the globe, she will document them on her blog.
The Work-in-Progress Society is a group I started on Flickr recently and we're already at 40+ members!
The photographs selected for the pool celebrate beauty in the unfinished. The subjects can be craft, art, design, illustration and the various tools, supplies and mess required to create the works. Whether the project ever gets finished is beside the point — we're just happy to be creating and exploring!
This upcoming show is a celebration of things stitched / sewn / knitted / crocheted / embroidered. Works on paper, fabric, appliqué, softies, art, accessories -- a variety of styles and materials are welcome. We are looking for local and Canadian illustrators, artists and crafters who make extraordinary things. The show is planned for a one-day event on the First Thursday of March. Please send us some sample images or links to your website if you are interested in participating. (More details available here.)
Mike Kerr's project "After School" discovers what illustrators and designers have been up to since graduating from the Alberta College of Art & Design. Web designer and crafty entrepreneur Paige Smith was recently interviewed about her line of jewellery holders.
"To balance out my corporate work, I have been yearning for something that was truly fulfilling on a personal level for many years. Working for a large company, it is easy for the individual person to get lost in the collective whole. So, the main creative reward that I have is the pride and passion that I feel for this creative endeavor and which is something I can call my own." Read the full interview with Paige here.
Visit Paige's website for more images of her jewellery holders and go to her new Etsy shop to purchase one! (They make a great gift for a bride-to-be! She'll need someplace to hold her special rings and are made from saucers both special and old.)
In homage to the typewriter advertising mirrors of old, I have created a new version for the modern typist. "Type Strong Type Happy" shall be the motto of the UPPERCASE typewriter club. (This mirror and some other typewriter mirrors will be in the online shop soon.)
This Type Tote from House Industries is quite striking.
It is only a matter of time (and money) before I try my hand at print-on-demand fabrics and start sewing more UPPERCASE products. That's a project to put on wish list for the new year.
'Tis the season for making gifts! We will be hosting drop-in button and mirror-making on Sunday afternoons from noon-4pm. Buttons are $1, 3-inch buttons are $2.50 and mirrors are $7. These are perfect stocking-stuffers! You can bring your own papers or drawings, and we have supplies here as well. (Ages 10 and up, or younger children with their parents.) If you would like to organize a special workshop for a group of 4-6 people, please email us.
We had a handsome order for our UPPERCASE initial book bags this week. A design company will be giving these out as gifts to their employees and clients. In case you missed it, here's a post that shows the other items that can be customised for gifts. (The letters appear in reverse in this photograph because they are transfers that we iron on to canvas bags.)
Until December 13, we will be accepting orders for personalized Christmas gifts such as these Custom Name Pocket Mirrors (above), "It's your bag" customized tote bag, and our UPPERCASE initial bags. (Give your gift in a reuseable tote bag instead of wrapping paper.)
You can also select from our initial pocket mirrors as well.
Please order soon to ensure delivery in time for Christmas. Consult the shop homepage for shipping deadlines to your location.
Haberdashery. A great word for many great things. These images are from the I love Haberdashery pool on Flickr. { 1. 2. 3. 4. } {Visit Jane Brocket's Yarnstorm blog for some great images. I am currently reading her book, The Gentle Art of Domesticity. I highly recommended it for its beautiful images and inspiring text.}
This was a lot of vintage embroidery thread up for grabs on ebay a while ago. I saved the images and digitally enhanced the colours and contrast. I sure wish I had bid on them — the labels are wonderful.
These wonderful images found at Beeton's Book of Needlework and The Encyclopedia of Needlework. (DMC logos, above. Lettering patterns, below.)
Janick's Neawear cross-stitched "Wall Wear" monograms would make a nice gift for someone on your list.
... that I did this week. A special thank you to The Production Kitchen in Toronto for their large order of Eclecto Pads and Eclecto Type Treasures. (If you want some to give or get this Christmas, please order soon before I run out of supplies.)
There are also fresh batches of Peas & Carrots and Read & Write Eclectonotes available. Thank you to Frank & Margaret (Wichita), Room 6 (Vancouver), Cog & Pearl (Brooklyn) and Greer (Chicago) for your wholesale orders. Please visit these fine stores.
These 3-inch pocket mirrors are hand-pressed in UPPERCASE. We have a selection of mirrors made from vintage maps from around the world and mirrors with lovely initials. More designs will be introduced over the next while. At just $7 for the mirror and its black velvet pouch, these are perfect stocking stuffers. You can purchase them in our online shop and in person. (Wholesale inquiries are welcome, too.)
If you'd like to make your own buttons and mirrors, drop in for a Sunday workshop!
UPPERCASE is a quarterly print magazine inspired by craft, design and illustration. A playful exploration of creativity, an affinity for vintage ephemera, and a love of handmade are some elements common in each issue. The magazine boasts high-quality paper and printing, a unique design aesthetic and incredible attention to detail.
