I'm heading to Toronto for a quick event. I'll have to tell you later what it is—secret for now!

UPPERCASE will be in Edmonton next weekend for the Royal Bison. I've heard lots of good things about this event, so we look forward to seeing folks in Edmonton.

And we'll be at the Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn next month, and Renegade SF and LA in July. (Still looking for some help, please see the post below...)

Help wanted!

Over the summer, UPPERCASE will have a booth at the Renegade Craft Fairs in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Los Angeles. We're looking for individuals in those cities to assist us for a couple days.

There are two positions available in each city, one representative who will be able to take care of some pre-event and post-event responsibilities for us and help us run the booth over a weekend. We also need one or two people who have no pre-event and post-event duties, but simply need to show up at the event and help us as booth attendants.

UPPERCASE representative

  • Receive shipments of inventory from UPPERCASE prior to the event and store these until the Renegade event.
  • Transport inventory to the event site and back each day - a car or access to one is required.
  • After the event is complete, facilitate shipping of remaining product to the next location.
  • Pick up necessary supplies that are easier to buy locally than ship.
  • Plus booth attendant duties as described below.
  • We'll reimburse any costs associated with these tasks.

An honorarium will be provided.

UPPERCASE booth attendants

  • Show up at the event an hour prior to opening to help us set up the booth.
  • Greet attendees, answer questions about UPPERCASE products, handle and record transactions using tools and instruction supplied by UPPERCASE.
  • We will be on-site at all times to help.

An honorarium will be provided.

Additional Perks:
Swag from UPPERCASE
One-year subscription or renewal
Post event dinner

Event dates, hours & locations:
You must be available on the dates below in your city.

Brooklyn: June 11-12, 10am to 8 pm, McCarren Park - all positions for Brooklyn are now filled.
San Francisco: July 9-10, 10am to 8pm, Fort Mason Center
LA: July 16-17: 10am to 8pm, Los Angeles State Historic Park

For more information about the fairs visit the Renegade Craft Fair website.

To apply, please email janine@uppercasemagazine.com with a description about yourself (ie craft fair or retail experience and/or resume and pertinent urls) and please specify if you are applying to be a representative or booth attendant in which city.

Update:

All positions for Brooklyn are now filled. We still need both a representative and booth attendant for LA, as well as a representative for San Francisco. Thank you!

Lisa Congdon + A Collection a Day in Portland

This Friday at Land, Portland.

A note about A Collection a Day preorders: due to a situation beyond our control, the mass mailout of preordered books has been delayed. Things will be in the postal system as soon as possible. The situation has also affected the mailing of Issue 9, but that is now back on track as well. Thanks for your patience.

Work/Life 2: book reception tonight!

Please join us tonight from 5-9pm in celebrating the release of Work/Life 2, the UPPERCASE directory of illustration.

This international edition features the creative lives of 100 illustrators. From as close to home as here in Calgary, across the nation and to our American neighbours south of the border and farther afield to Australia, Scandinavia, Israel, Western Europe and the UK, Work/Life 2 has a lovely and diverse mix. Local artists will be in attendance and available to sign your books.

ONE NIGHT ONLY: Local designers, art directors and media buyers as well as ACAD Visual Communications students are eligible for a free copy of the book—please bring your credentials or business card.

(Oh, and there'll be Crave cupcakes, too.)

Other First Thursday fun you'll enjoy:

Also in Art Central a few doors down from me, our friends from Burnt Toast Studio have a new exhibition up. You can also bring in a tshirt or hoodie and they will silkscreen designs on it or you can learn how to customize your own design.

The folks at Studio C in the lower level have an exhibition of sculpture made from found objects. Studio Todorovic has a show of prints from Vancouver Island artists as well as great art supplies and Nation is having a sale. Read more about First Thursday here.

First Thursday this week!

Snap + Tumble

In celebration of the release of the latest issue of the magazine for the creative and curious, UPPERCASE presents "The Touchy Feely Letterpress Exhibition" and "The Perfect Match Miniature Label Montage".

The current issue features a Letterpress Sampler in which an actual letterpress item like a card, art print or other goodie is inserted randomly into each magazine. You can see (and feel) all the submissions at the exhibition in the gallery, read about all the letterpress printers in the magazine, and view their work in our online gallery.

We're giving away a dozen complete samplers, each containing over 50 amazing items. Stay tuned to the blog through the month of February for details. Come down to Art Central this Thursday to win one in person!

Also on display are vintage matchbox labels; have your own free label that comes with a purchase of the magazine or a subscription.

A must-see show for lovers of letterpress and those enamored with ephemera! Join us this Thursday, February 3 from 5-9pm for a warm reception.

Vintage pop-up marketplace this Sunday

There's a cool event being held this Sunday afternoon at Art Central:

A group of Calgary vintage clothing sellers are bringing their wares to Art Central for a unique one day only “Vintage Pop-up Marketplace”.

After a successful Vintage Style Week held at Fashion Central in September of last year, this group of vintage clothing sellers have decided to do another show. “We thoroughly enjoyed bringing our vintage fashions to the downtown core.” said Leslie Holth, co-owner of Vintage Bliss. “Calgarians appreciate the uniqueness and quality of these one of a kind items and love working them into their wardrobes. They also understand how wearing vintage is not only fashionable, but sustainable, as these items have no environmental impact on our world.”

Holth, along with vendors Bonton Vintage and Patina Design Works will be selling clothing, jewellery, accessories and select collectibles from the 1920s to the 1980s. There will be a special focus on party dresses for graduation and gala events as well as clothing and gifts for guys and girls for upcoming Valentine’s Day.

“We will also have roving models dressed in vintage finery, a professional photographer documenting the event and other vintage related surprises.” said Holth. “A Dress to Remember” happens on Sunday, January 30th from 12 noon to 6pm at Art Central. The marketplace will be held on the lower level common area of the building. Art Central is located on the corner of Center Street and 7th Avenue SW.

UPPERCASE in Chicago!

Hi everyone! UPPERCASE magazine will be at the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago this weekend. Alas, I wish I could be there personally, but Emily at Orange Beautiful will be stocking the magazine at her booth. She also has some covetable back issues and copies of The Elegant Cockroach and The Suitcase Series: Camilla Engman. Look at this lovely sign she's made:

(The wording is hers! What an awesome compliment, thank you.)

I always enjoy the Renegade graphics by Kate Sutton:

You can also enter the raffle to win a free UPPERCASE subscription at the Renegade Craft Fair booth. Thanks again, Emily, for promoting the magazine and selling it in your shop. Have a great crafty weekend.

It's First Thursday!

Tonight Art Central is celebrating its sixth birthday! Crave cupcakes, party hats, music, and the annual ACAD wearable art fashion show are part of the festivities. In UPPERCASE, the exhibition of art from our latest book The Elegant Cockroach is on view. We have books signed by the author and copies of the latest issue of the magazine. Try your luck with a draw for a free subscription, in store only.

Book Launch tonight!

Tonight we celebrate the publication of The Elegant Cockroach by Deidre Anne Martin with illustrations by Stefanie Augustine. Friends and family are welcome to join us from 5-7pm and then it is open to the public from 7-9pm. Deidre would be happy to sign your book and Stefanie's original collages are for sale. Please come by!

We're in downtown Calgary, upper level of Art Central which is at the corner of 7th ave SW and Centre Street. Conveniently located along the c-train route and kitty corner from the Hyatt Hotel.

Above are images of Stefanie's illustration work in progress.

The book is hardcover with black fabric and a copper foil beneath the illustrated slipjacket. Matte black endpapers with silky cream paper. Very elegant!

It's First Thursday!

Hello there!

It's First Thursday and time to get back into a new groove. Although I haven't been in the gallery much these past summer months (our big road trip to San Francisco and the Renegade Craft Fair, working from home so that I can also take care of my baby), with the cool September air signaling the end of summer, I'm eager to return on a more regular basis to my lovely studio and gallery space in Art Central.

Due to the overwhelming success of our recent open call for submissions "Feeling Bookish", I've put together an exhibition of over 40 of the best designs sent in from both professional book designers and our readers at large. The brief was to design a cover that is a self portrait of your life, and as you can see by my design above, it has been a round the clock juggling act between being a new mom and a publisher! (Thanks to Conan O'Brien for the title phrase.)

Please join us this Thursday evening from 5-9pm for this interesting and personal exhibition and other fun activities in Art Central.

Please come by and say hello, we've missed you!

And for all our UPPERCASE friends from near and far, there are some really exciting projects that I'll be announcing in the next week, so please stay tuned to the blog. Not to mention issue 7 of the magazine is off to print this week as well!

All the best,

—Janine

Hello, Portland!

Glen and I will be at Land today (Friday) from 5 to 7pm. We'd love to meet all our Portland friends face-to-face at long last. We hope you will join us for this little meet and greet event. (Plus see a fine exhibition of work by regular UPPERCASE contributor, Frank Chimero!)

I also have a few limited-edition notebooks handmade with makeready from issue 6, free while supplies last. We also have Eclectonotes and some back issues (issues 3 and 5) with us. Sorry, issues 1 and 2 are completely sold out — we even have to ask our own relatives for extra archival copies! There are still copies of issue 4 available, but we sold out of those on this trip and so that issue is available online.

First Thursday: Crowd Sourcing Show

TONIGHT!

June 3, First Thursday
One night only from 4-9pm
refreshments will be served!

A creatively uncurated exhibition of works by friends of UPPERCASE and one communual canvas collaboration!

Taking our cue from the popularity of social media and crowd sourcing, let's give this a try in a gallery setting: bring your work to UPPERCASE on Thursday, June 3 between 4-6pm for display. It can be a painting, drawing, sewn item, photograph, sculpture or you may even read from your latest poem or work in progress. The only stipulations being that the work should be ready to hang and be family-friendly. (If you'd like to sell your work, the split is 60% to the artist. Please price accordingly. Work doesn't have to be for sale.)

We will also have a canvas for those who want to have some hands-on fun and play with our collection of letraset, rubber stamps, and other inspiring goodies.

A gallery experiment:

Calling LOCAL CALGARY artists, illustrators, photographers, craftspeople, writers! For the coming First Thursday, UPPERCASE is trying out a bit of an experiment:

Renegade Craft Fair this weekend!

This weekend is the Renegade Craft Fair's first event in Austin, Texas. I've heard nothing but good things about this series of fairs across the US and I'm especially looking forward to the San Francisco fair in late July: UPPERCASE will have a booth!

For those attending the Austin event (free entry!), make sure to enter the raffle for a library of UPPERCASE goodies. There are also a limited number of magazines to be given away! Check out the amazing list of participants; you'll see some friends of UPPERCASE listed.
