Type Tuesday: Calgary Script

Veer recently released a typeface by Alejandro Paul called "Calgary Script":

Calgary Script was inspired by the brush script on a “Welcome To Calgary” sign located in, you guessed it, Calgary, Canada. Now that the typeface is finished, it’s evident that Calgary Script was highly influenced by the many books on American sign painting I have absorbed over the years. The overall effect feels graphically slick, like something out of the early 1980s, but still harkens back to a few decades earlier. Impressive caps and a free-flowing lowercase make for a speedy, determined, and instinctively organized typeface. Foremost a packaging font with a true supermarket spin, Calgary Script is chock full of OpenType features including ligatures, alternates, and ordinals designed specifically to follow numbers.

The Calgary Herald has an article about the font release: "In the chock-full world of type styles, Calgary has finally joined the exclusive ranks of Chicago, New York, Geneva and Monaco in having its own font. Some design experts, artists and ordinary Calgarians are applauding the new Calgary Script for its playful, bold, retro feel — a cursive type that reflects Calgary's adventurous, western spirit that is "approachable" with a "man-on-the-street" feel. But others question its uniqueness and appropriateness for a city that's long been more metropolitan than Cowtown." Read the full Calgary Herald article here
