The french film 'Entre les murs' (english title: 'The Class' 2008) is a docudrama directed by Laurent Cantet and based on François Bégaudeau's semi-autobiographical novel chronicling his experiences teaching middle school in inner city Paris. Bégaudeau acts the part of the teacher, and the student roles are performed by students. Everything I have heard about this film leads me to believe it is a realist gem.

For those interested in the wider aesthetic and cultural placement of this film in realist cinema, I highly recommend A.O. Scott's essay , 'Neo-Neo Realism' in the New York Times magazine.
