Another reason to love Anthropologie!
/Here's some great news: because of our Issue #7 feature of the extraordinarily talented painter Christopher Stott, the art director at Anthropologie.com commissioned Chris to paint five original works for their website. The paintings will be featured throughout the week.
Last year, the Frugal and Fancy feature on my friend Paige Smith also caught the eye of their buyer and her ring holders (below) are in stores across in the US and Canada. It's very exciting and gratifying to me that UPPERCASE magazine is inspiring such opportunities! And it just goes to show you how Anthropologie as a company embraces independent artists and designers.
I'm an avid Anthropologie fan and I know that many of my readers are enthusiastic customers as well. I would love to have my books and the magazine in their stores. Their curated selection of books is always smart, pretty and inspiring.
Cereal Box call for submissions
/Here's a teaser of some of the cereal box designs I've received. Keep them coming! The deadline is February 20. More details below and on our participate page.
Issue 9 (spring) explores how food inspires creativity. For this open call, you are invited to submit your cereal box designs and illustrations! Are you a fan of the sugary sweet cartoon-character puffs? Or perhaps a grown-up granola inspires a more typographic solution? You can redesign an existing cereal box or feel free to come up with a new name and concept for your cereal.
I plan on making mockups of the best submissions and photographing them for inclusion in the magazine. Please download a template (illustrator file or pdf file) and design the front, side and top flap. Files should be submitted as 300dpi jpgs or pdfs and named with your last name. Please include your full name, address and email in the design file. Files can be uploaded here.
DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 20
Call for submissions: Florals
/For issue #9 (spring 2011) of UPPERCASE magazine, we invite you to submit creative photographs on the theme of "florals". The best images will be published in the magazine. Go beyond a snapshot of flowers... be creative in your composition, technique or processing. Interpret the theme through objects, fabric and fashion.
Please make sure that you have a print-ready file available (at least 4" wide, 300dpi) should we decide to publish your image. By submitting to the group, you agree to let UPPERCASE post your images on our blog as well as publish your photo in the magazine if it is selected.
Enter your work to the UPPERCASE florals group on flickr.
DEADLINE FOR POTENTIAL PUBLICATION: FEBRUARY 20

Mini magazines
/
How cute are these miniature magazines made by Anna-Maria at The Shopping Sherpa? I can't wait to see where they'll go! Alas, making mini magazines is the only way to get a complete set these days since most of the back issues are now out of print.
Look for an article by Anna-Maria about mid-century miniature houses in issue 8!
Emily Dumas
/Emily Dumas is a new subscriber who sent an email to introduce us to her work. Very nicely done.
Visit her site Flowers in May for stationery, prints and her blog. Thanks, Emily!
San Francisco: through the eyes of Kirstie Tweed

Kirstie Tweed was recently on a trip to San Francisco with her mom. Visit her blog to see more gorgeous photos. (Thanks for the post about us, Kirstie!)
Kirstie took the photos of me and my typewriter that appear on the letter from the editor page in every issue.
Call for Submissions
/Feeling bookish?
If you were a book, what genre of book would you be?
Fiction or non fiction? Are you a classic? An adventure tale, western or mystery? Perhaps you're a romance, chick lit or bodice-ripper? For our fall issue, we're asking readers to design a book cover—but not just any cover. How would you represent yourself through words and images, design and typography? Give your book a title, credit yourself as author and the rest is up to you!
Submissions are due by August 23.
The best will be published in the fall issue of UPPERCASE magazine.
6" x 9" 300dpi (design of the book spine and back cover is optional)
Please upload them here.
UPPERCASE flickr group
/I don't know why I didn't start this sooner, but I've formed an UPPERCASE magazine pool where you can put all the great photos you take of the magazine "in the wild". It is so fun to see the magazine and how it fits in your lives.
Companions

Please leave a comment or send us an email if you plan on participating. Space is limited and we'll select the best ones for print and compile an online gallery for all submissions.

Reader profile: Kristin Loffer Theiss
/"I live in the Skagit Valley—about an hour south of Vancouver, BC," writes Kristin. "The tulip fields are one this areas biggest agricultural features. My husband and I took my son out to the fields for pictures last night—right after the new mag came in the mail. So, it made an appearance."
Kristin makes children's toys and clothes (you may have seen her ad in the UPPERCASE marketplace pages). Visit her Etsy shop for more cuteness...
She has a lovely workspace! Irene at Bloesem has an extensive interview posted where you can see more of Kristin's home. Visit the KLT blog for more inspiration and insight into Kristin's creative process.
Thanks, Kristin. I'm so happy to have a reader like you.
Reader profile: Blackbird Letterpress
/I recently received this nice image from Kathryn Hunter, proprietor of Blackbird Letterpress. She writes, "It is such a rewarding wait 4 times a year for the next issue. I have attached a pic of where like to read the latest issue. I live in Louisiana and we like to go out in the salt marsh way south, not quite to the actual gulf but almost. (Louisiana is bordered to the south by marsh before the gulf of mexico, though it is decreasing every minute) So I like to take Uppercase and sit outside, watch the birds fly overhead while I read cover to cover. Maybe with a cup of coffee, maybe a beer if it seems late enough to be proper. ;)"
Blackbird Letterpress will be debuting at the National Stationery Show this May. You can preview some of their cards, like this clever bear hug design, in their Etsy shop.
We wish Kathryn much success at the big show!
Very smart pets

It seems that pets rather like UPPERCASE. Thanks, Melissa!
Thanks, Faye + Co!

I love seeing readers' photos of UPPERCASE magazine and books when they arrive to your homes. I'm always so honoured that people actually take the time to do this! This photo, above, is by Diane of Faye + Co.
Diane's portfolio has some very strong invitation designs, like this steamship-themed wedding invitation suite. No doubt the finds in her Etsy shop, Vintage Suburbia, influence her vintage-inspired typography. Thanks, Diane!
