"I love my UPPERCASE subscription because I just can't keep my hands off the magazine," writes Kristin deNeeve.

"The design is clean, inviting, and cozy all at the same time. The illustrations are quirky and smart, and the content is so inspiring and relevant that I find myself reading the same issue over and over, but always discovering something new. I love the magazine's hand-crafted feel---almost like a scrapbook of inspiration. Each page is valuable, unlike many design magazines that are so littered with ads that you have to hunt through them to get to the good stuff. UPPERCASE is all good stuff."

everyday day

We gave our good friend Christopher Rouleau a set of our everyday notebooks to play with on the condition that he share his work with us. Christopher has embarked on an exciting year-long creative challenge—visit his blog to see how his "12 months of type" project unfolds. Each month, he'll be experimenting with a different medium of technique... he even lists 'FOOD!' as one of his mediums to try in 2014.

Christopher passed along some everyday notebooks to Tanya Roberts of Snap + Tumble Letterpress Goods. She also shared her images of everyday notebooks in use. Don't forget to pick up your set of everyday notebooks and share your everyday creativity with us.

Janine and I sat down on Thursday to talk about #20. I'm privy to her insights as she designs each issue. It's so fascinating that I knew all of you would love it. You'll be able to tell that we were rather nervous but, for our first time, we think we did a great job. We hope you enjoy and share this video

If you're a subscriber, #20 should arrive at your door very soon. If you're not a subscriber, please consider subscribing...but don't just take our word for it.

subscriber love

I love my UPPERCASE subscription because it highlights all of the things I love related to design, print and creativity (plus the smell of ink on paper makes me happy). I am a print designer, artist and journal maker so being able to see what others out there are creating is both exciting and educational. I look forward to receiving my UPPERCASE issue every quarter—I pour through the pages relishing in the amazing content, and yes, the smell :)

It continues to share a community of those who strive to be more than a line item on a profit & loss statement. As you move through the pages with fever, yet soaking it all in as if in slow motion... it shows all that can be and all that is possible. It is a joyful magazine that fosters and redefines the spirit of creating.

subscriber love

We asked UPPERCASE subscribers why they love the magazine:

Having a subscription to UPPERCASE is like taking a mini-vacation four times a year. There are so many creative projects and people in every issue, and I always come away feeling inspired and learning about something or someone that I never knew existed.
Melanie Biehle, subscriber

So much inspiration gorgeously presented in one quality magazine. I love that UPPERCASE uncovers talented people across such a broad range of fields and from all parts of the globe, it's truly international and truly inspiring!

My next favourite thing about UPPERCASE is the way the magazine is centred around a community. As a subscriber there are all kinds of opportunities to participate in the UPPERCASE world. You really feel that your support for and involvement in the UPPERCASE world is worthwhile.

I'm proud of UPPERCASE. Not only is it a Canadian publication that supports individual curiosity, it also focuses on type, textiles, drawing, writing, historic traditions, and quality design—things I like—and all with good taste, humour and beauty. I treasure my copies. I love how they feel. I love how they look. They are worthy of all the re-reads that I do. Now that I have a subscription, I feel I'm part of a greater community

a good read: back issue #17

My favourite time of day. Tea, biscuits, and catching up on my favourite magazines.

via The Curious Nomad

If your Christmas vacation involves a lot of curling up with a good read, than may we suggest some back issues of UPPERCASE magazine?

In issue #17, we invited stationery and paper goods companies both big and (mostly) small to submit their work for inclusion in the UPPERCASE Stationery Guide. The guide includes 50 company profiles and Top Ten Tips from the industry leaders. (You can see a preview below.)

This issue also features our scratch 'n' sniff cover. Read about how we chose the scent here

Other loose themes we explored in gathering content for this issue were interpretations of fragility, transparency and ephemerality. From the fleeting beauty of scent to the delicate mechanics of a butterfly wing to the wondrous properties of glass, we learn that things that might appear breakable or temporary are, in fact, powerfully enduring.

We're a proud supporter of Got Craft?, Vancouver's largest indie craft fair. Started in 2007, Got Craft? aims to bring together a community that fosters handmade and D.I.Y. culture. In addition to their offerings from makers in the area, Got Craft? has workshops so visitors can make something to take home. We've sent a selection of our products and back issues out to the event as well.

The event runs December 14th and 15th. Full details here

back issue profile: #16

Issue #16 looks right at home at stockist Spruce Collective in Abbotsford, Canada.

Issue #16 is perfectly suited to this time of year—full of inspiration to fuel the feathering of your nest. In #16, we look to techniques, traditions and styles of other centuries and other histories to influence in fresh ways. The tintype is revitalized, embroidered samplers speak volumes, old factories, warehouses and hospitals foster new creative communities. Old-fashioned hard work is celebrated with stylish nods to workwear and peasant garb; the straw broom is an emblem of honouring tradition. With knitting, knotting and needlework, we stay busy and cozy in our home sweet homes.

love letter

K by Shelley Davies

The people featured in UPPERCASE are like-minded souls, those of us who like to stay up late and make stuff. Those of us who like to make messes and see what comes out of it all. People who are trying to make a mark with something hand-wrought, something individual, something unique, perhaps with wit and fun involved too. People who like a beautifully laid out page of type, or a bunch of witty illustrations that just captures an idea so eloquently. People who want to start a creative business doing what they love, sending their thoughtful work out into the world. These are my friends or people with whom I'd like to be friends.

revealing #20

We're so excited about #20 that we couldn't wait to share the cover!

The main theme throughout issue #20 is “broadcasting”. Our broad interpretation of this term includes the sharing of ideas graphically and publicly through posters, social media and public art and also encompasses amateur radio, graphic novels and collecting vintage advertising posters. To round out the issue, haberdashery, hat-making and a love of sewing notions is a pretty and crafty thread of content throughout. At UPPERCASE magazine, we love print on paper. For this milestone issue, the cover will be printed with a silver metallic Pantone ink.

If you don't already have one, please consider buying a subscription. We also have gift subscriptions and gift cards—perfect for this holiday season.

Thank you to our cover artist Jason Munn.

(Issue #20 will begin arriving at the doors of our subscribers and stockists in January 2014.)

Please share this post with your friends and social networks and let them know how much you love UPPERCASE.

back issue profile: #15

Issue #15 is lovingly called the 'science issue' around the office. In this issue we investigated the creative side of science and were enthralled with the small bits of matter that, when assembled, create something greater. On the softer side, coloured molecular orbs of baubles and beads were the components of stunning jewellery and art. The flat plane saw pixels, points and grids create a framework for two-dimensional creativity.

This issue included our special 'Beautiful Bitmaps' special feature (preview it here). For this section, 26 typographers, designers and illustrators interpreted a vestigial component of digital type, the bitmap.

Back issues make great holiday gifts and this creative specimen appeals to both left and right brain thinkers. Bundle up on back issues and save. Purchase three or more back issues and get $3 off each issue.

Back issues make great holiday gifts and playful #14 is sure to delight everyone on your list. Bundle up on back issues and save. Purchase three or more back issues and get $3 off each issue.

Issue #14 was all about play, which seems fitting for this festive time of the year. We explored the mark-making of sport, the aesthetic allure of baseball and the graphic appeal of blocks. We took an extended visit to the wonderful world of children’s books (where donning a chicken suit is all in a day’s work). We zigged and zagged with a love of chevrons; we played with letters and words to create poetry and products and we ate pancakes for breakfast, lunch and supper.

We asked UPPERCASE subscribers why they love the magazine and how it inspires them:

UPPERCASE makes me happy and inspired. UPPERCASE throws a new light on design & art and makes exciting investigations about art, illustration, typography, form & material. I appreciate & treasure every single issue and always long for the next one!

'How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...'

  1. The excitement of my new issue hitting the doormat, ripping off the plastic packaging and the first sniff.
  2. On opening racing through it to see what lies in store.
  3. Getting a big mug of hot chocolate to read more slowly and leisurely.
  4. Reading on days when I am feeling uninspired, demotivated and spirits are down, my UPPERCASE mags give me a lift and nudges me back into my studio.
  5. There is ALWAYS something inspiring between the covers.
  6. Feeling part of a community.
  7. It's pretty.
  8. The discovery of new artists and creatives.
  9. Learning things I didn't know.
  10. UPPERCASE magazines have gone with me to hospital and have got me through some difficult times.

can only repeat what others have said better and more eloquently. I'm very happy, also spoilt, because no other magazine is now still meeting up to my expectations...you've done that to me. you've actually really gone and done that. Yes, subscribing is a lot of money. But hey, I wanna pay for quality.
